Gear has a long history in China. According to historical records, gears were used in ancient China as far as 400-200 BC. The bronze gears unearthed in Shanxi Province are ancient gears that have been found so far. In 1765, Euler of Switzerland put forward the mathematical basis for the analytical study of involute tooth profile, and clarified the relationship between the curvature radius of tooth profile curve and the position of curvature center of a pair of meshing gears. Later, Savary further completed this method and became the Euler Savery equation. Robert Willis, who contributed to the application of involute profile, proposed that involute gear has the advantage of constant angular speed ratio when the center distance changes. In 1873, German engineer H. PPE puts forward the involute profile of gears with different number of teeth when the pressure angle changes, thus laying the ideological foundation of modern modified gears. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the principle of generating gear cutting method and the special machine tools and cutting tools used for gear cutting appeared one after another, which made the gear processing more perfect.
It was not until the end of the 17th century that people began to study the tooth shape which can correctly transmit motion. In the early 20th century, the involute gear was widely used in Europe, and then the cycloid gear was widely used in industry. After that, the modified gears, circular arc gears, bevel gears, helical gears and so on were developed.
Modern gear technology has reached: gear modulus 0.004-100 mm; gear diameter from 1 mm to 150 m; transmission power up to 100000 kW; rotational speed up to 100000 rpm; circumferential speed up to 300 m / s.
